ARRESTED ON SUSPICION

Michael A. Leary Found Prowling About the Jail

Michael A. Leary, a barber, was arrested yesterday morning at 1.30 o'clock by Officer Silas D. Hemmenway at the Summer Street Jail. A bag of tobacco was found in his possession, and at the time he was trying to get it under a door on the Prospect Street side. The officer's attention was first attracted to Leary when he was on his way home after leaving Station 1. The man was apparently trying to escape attention when the officer passed, and acted strangely.

The officer did not pay much attention to him at first but on getting up the street a way, thought it strange that a man should be prowling around and started back. When he got opposite Hanover Street, he saw Leary on his hands and knees at a small door. He walked over and grabbing him by the collar, asked him what he was doing. Leary said he was trying to get some tobacco into a man named Houghton, who was night fireman.

In the bag, 10 hands of Old Navy tobacco were found and the officer decided to take Leary to Station 1, where he was locked up on suspicion. The tobacco was kept at the station, and later Leary was released. He says that Houghton, who is serving a term of two years for adultery, wrote him a letter some time ago, asking him for tobacco, and last night he was trying to get it in to him when arrested.

At the jail the officers are of the opinion that the tobacco has been smuggled in for some time past.
