The brig Ariel, from Baltimore, had arrived at Valparaiso; she was very near being taken by the Spanish frigate Venganza, had she not been assisted by the boats of the U. S. sloop of war Ontario.
Buenos Ayres was all rejoicing in consequence of the splendid victory gained over the royalists in Chili, which news reached Buenos Ayres a few days before the W. S. sailed. Upwards of 1000 cannon were fired on the occasion, and the city brilliantly illuminated for 3 nights.
Captain Jenkins has brought papers detailing the particulars. The Peruvian army, of 7000 men, was totally destroyed; all killed or wounded, and no resources left to raise another. The loss of the patriots was considerable—1000 killed.
