Full Text

Fort Prince George, Jan. 22. Nothing worth notice since my last of the 18th, only yesterday an officer and a party being out to cut wood, Hugh Just and William Townsend, two of the provincials, staid behind unknown to the party, and were shot and scalped within sight of the fort, by a party of Indians. I gave all the timely assistance possible, but on our approach the Indians made off, leaving behind them a Creek war token. The Indians have now abandoned those lower towns almost entirely. Several white people (greater villains than the savages themselves) who remain among the Indians, persuade them not to deliver up their prisoners, telling them we shall never carry on war against them while they keep them in confinement. The Creeks continue to give them assurances of assistance. Since Oucannoutota returned from the French with the goods and ammunition, and has had those assurances from the Creeks, he says, What Nation or what people am I afraid of? I do not regard all the forces that the great king George can send against me among those mountains.
