Leasors File on Claims in Weippe District.
LEWISTON, Idaho, Feb. 8.—Frank Gaffney Saturday filed 13 applications for mining claims in the Weippe district, near the land recently leased from the state by G. W. Thompson.
Active prospecting will begin in this district for iron ore as soon as the weather is favorable and the drills arrive. Frank and Will Gaffney and S. P. Fitzgerald are interested in the property and have spent considerable money in prospecting for iron ore during the last two years. They are associated with G. W. Thompson and expect to spend much money in prospecting on showings which indicate the presence of hematite ore in commercial quantities.
The furor raised by the announcement of the lease has subsided since it has been definitely shown that the lease carries only mineral rights. The timber still belongs to the state, while the operations of the lease holders is confined entirely to mineral development. It is expected that mineral experts from the Duluth ore district will visit the tract this spring and make full examinations of the district for the purpose of reporting to eastern iron ore barons who have been attracted by the reports sent east by local mining experts.
