Full Text

Among the many things, which one sees every day in the opposition prints, which serve to amuse rather than irritate, is the abuse they lavish on any man, even of their own party, who happens to express doubts of British infallibility, or ventures to approve the measures of our own government. It extends even to those who have dared in any way to resist British arrogance.

As an instance of the first character, we refer to Mr. Russell, who has been persecuted by every factious print in the Union because he has spoken the language of an American in relation to the injuries of his country; but, above all, is he hated because he dared to detail a conversation with my Lord of Castlereagh, in which the said Lord laid bare the base views and corrupt policy of his government to the penetration of our able Agent.

As an instance of the other class who serve as targets for faction's shafts, we cite the case of the gallant Commodore Rodgers, who has for months been ploughing the ocean in vain search of the enemy. He will never, we believe, be forgiven by the factious prints for having "riddled" the Little Belt, and they never cease to persecute him with impotent malice. Had he quietly submitted to British insolence at that time, and pocketed the affront, we have little doubt that he would now be as much caressed as he is injured by those who bark at his heels when his back is turned --ib.
