Infamous Outrage.—On Friday morning last, a respectable young lady, lately from the country, went into the dry goods store No. 158, Canal-street, and inquired the price per yard of Italian silk that was lying on the counter. The reply was 'one dollar,' and the lady turned about to walk out, when the clerk asked her what she would be willing to give. 'I do not want it at present,' says she, 'and if I did I would not pay more than six dollars for ten yards.'— The clerk with the utmost effrontery asked her if she meant to insult him—called her a swindler—and told her she ought to go back to the Penitentiary where she came from. The object of his abuse, alarmed at his conduct, walked out, but she had not gone farther than half a block, when the fellow, whose name was ascertained to be Hezekiah Clarke, caught her by the arm, and conducted her back to the store, where he cut off ten yards of the silk and endeavored to persuade her to take them, but she refusing to deal with him on any terms, he detained her there two hours, pretending he had sent for a constable to take her to prison, and taking advantage of her unprotected state, used towards her the most insulting language imaginable, and even before she was permitted to depart, her reticule, containing five dollars, was snatched from her and put in the money drawer. A sworn statement of the above facts was yesterday made before one of the Police magistrates, who promptly issued a warrant for the arrest of the fellow, but it was ascertained that he had left the city; his employer however came to the office and returned the money to the lady, apologizing at the same time, and promising to discharge the clerk.
