LONDON, Oct. 3. A Spanish vessel is arrived at Portsmouth from Cadiz; by which it is said, there is an account that 700 of the garrison of Gibraltar had signed an instrument to make themselves masters of the place; that they had already nailed up 20 pieces of the cannon; that they were to proceed to the murdering of the Governor, and all the inhabitants that opposed them, ask the place, throw open the gates and go over to the Spaniards; this affair was discovered to the Governor by a common soldier, who signed the instrument with reluctance, and by force; and that the day before this ship sailed, 41 of the mutineers were hanged; and that the day she sailed, 46 more were hanged; so we hope, by this time, the whole is quelled.

The Rumour of a mutinous Conspiracy among some of the private Men of the Garrison at Gibraltar, is not entirely groundless; and we can assure the Publick from the best Authority, that only one private Man of the 6th Regiment had been executed on this Account when the last Letters from that Place came away.

Livy relates, in his 28th Book, that a Legion in Garrison at Regium, having cut the principal Inhabitants to Pieces, possessed that Place ten Years. For which the whole Legion, consisting of Four Thousand Men, were put to death in the Market Place of Rome.

Event Details

A Spanish vessel arrived at Portsmouth from Cadiz with accounts that 700 garrison soldiers at Gibraltar signed to seize the place, nailed up 20 cannon, planned to murder the Governor and opponents, open gates to Spaniards; discovered by a reluctant common soldier; 41 mutineers hanged day before ship sailed, 46 more the day she sailed. Rumour not groundless, but only one executed when last letters arrived. Livy analogy: Roman legion at Regium mutinied, held place 10 years, later 4000 executed in Rome.
