Full Text

Extract of a letter from a gentleman in Cayuga, N. Y. to his friend in this town.

A strange phenomenon took place in the Owasco Lake, which lies about forty miles west of this, in the town of Aurelius. A noise was heard at the head of the Lake something similar to an earthquake. The people repaired thither to discover the cause. The water began to turn greenish, and dead fish began to rise on the top of the water. The whole Lake, which is about ten miles in length, turned putrid, and thousands of fish floated toward the shore, and thousands went down the outlet into the Seneca River. The stench was so great as to cause a violent sickness at the stomach in people who stood on the shores. But in a few days the water was cleansed and became pure as usual. It is supposed the cause was the bursting of a Copper Mine.
