We have given umbrage to a few of our subscribers, by the admission into our columns, of articles in favor of the ground taken and the course pursued by the Temperance Society. We wish our readers, however, distinctly to understand, that we take no part in this affair. Though friendly to Temperance, in the proper sense of the term, we advocate neither this movement, that, nor the other; and have never had the remotest idea of identifying the Herald with the question. The agents of the Temperance Society requested permission to occupy one column of our paper per week. This permission we granted, on the condition of the payment of a certain sum, per annum—about the amount we pay workmen for setting the types —and receive and publish their communications as we do for other advertisers. All the matter furnished by them is thus published, and in no other manner.
We make this exposition to set the matter right, and to remove any impression that might exist, that we intend to make our paper the organ of any of the numerous societies of the day, or to give it the character of what is called a Temperance Paper. In the course we have pursued, we had no intention or idea of giving offence to any one, as we thought all would recognise the right of an editor to occupy his advertising columns to the best advantage for himself.
The Herald was established for and is devoted to other objects; and although we ardently wish success to the cause of temperance—when temperately prosecuted—yet we cannot do more in our columns than we now do—and the feeble aid we thus render the cause of virtue and morality, we had a right to expect would be approved by all.
