Shut up the Hogs.

The election of trustees for the town next month is an important one. We want to elect a board who are in favor of shutting up the hogs. These animals with their present migratory privileges are a great nuisance to every property holder in town, and the "rest of mankind." It is hardly necessary to enumerate their vicious and destructive habits, of climbing over and through ordinary fences, rooting up and destroying gardens; and in the case of a neighbor of mine, getting into his cellar and destroying a whole quarter of beef. The only argument I have heard in favor of letting these animals run at large, is that they are street scavengers. Let us give you Webster's definition of scavenger: "A person whose employment is to clean the streets of a city, by scraping or sweeping and carrying off the filth."—Now is it not evident to every intelligent man, that these quadrupeds deposit more filth than they carry off. Let us, Mr. Editor, take some action on this subject, and nominate and elect a full board who are all right on the hog question.

Main Argument

the town should elect trustees who support shutting up hogs to prevent their nuisance and destruction to property, as they create more filth than they remove despite claims of being street scavengers.
