SLAVE TRADE.

It will be recollected that in 1803 Congress
permitted the ports of South Carolina to be
opened to the importation of Slaves for the
term of four years. The following is a statement
respecting that traffic in human beings
at a single port (Charleston) during the period
above mentioned. It was communicated to
Congress during the discussion of the Missouri
Question, by Mr. Smith, a member from South
Carolina, and by him procured from the Collector
of Customs for the port of Charleston.
