EMPLOYERS ASTONISHED

Heads of Department Stores Will Raise Wages to Save Virtue Being Sold

(By Associated Press.)

CHICAGO, March 8.--That low wages contribute to the downfall of women was admitted by Edward Hillman, the head of a store which employs a thousand females, before the senate vice committee. He was astonished when told the high percentage of immorality among store women.

Hillman said his conscience would suffer if he learned one of his employes had been forced to sell her virtue to live. He said he would employ an investigation to ascertain whether applicants could live on the wages they were to receive.

E. F. Mandel, of Mandel Bros., who testified Friday, notified Chairman O'Hara he was preparing to make certain his employes would receive a living wage.
