What have we gained by the War?
From a London Paper of September 21, 1815
"By the war out of which we have emerged with the U. States, we have given that country a tone of importance greater than it would have attained by thirty years growth."
What a lasting thorn is this "unjust, outrageous, unprovoked, wicked war" in the side of Federalism! This war "declared without cause, and prosecuted without energy"—this war, in which the democrats entered "without taking counsel of Heaven," and on which the "displeasure of the Almighty" was stamped, because it was waged against the "Bulwark of our holy religion"—this infidel war, declared "in accordance with the views and wishes of Bonaparte" giving such a "tone of importance" to America, that even British writers are compelled to confess the fact! What a commentary this on the denunciations and prophecies we have often heard from the pulpit!—Yankee.
