Police Booze Raids Net Seven Men and Fifty-One Cases of Beer

NASH AND HIS COHORTS CONDUCT BIG MIDNIGHT ROUNDUP OF 'JOINTS'

Five of Alleged Proprietors Taken Into Custody Last Night Produce $100 Bail Each; Two Men and the Fifty-one Cases Locked in Jail for the Night.

Seven alleged operators of joints and fifty-one cases of alleged beer were taken into custody when the entire Las Vegas police force got into action under the direction of Chief of Police Percy Nash last night for a roundup of beer parlors and "speakeasies."

Five men, facing charges of operating places where alcoholic beverages were sold, each paid $100 bail for his freedom and two others slept the remainder of the night in the city bastile "in lieu of bail."

The men who were released on bond signed their names as Louis Smitz, 48; S. Fisher, 50; W. Brown, 40; Tom Marshall; and C. Anderson, 70.

The two who remained in jail were Dinty Moore, 38, and Tip Deal, 64.

Beer Commandeered

The fifty-one cases believed, for the most part at least, to contain beer, also reposed in the city "hoose-gow" as one "wit" expressed it, but not in the same compartment with the prisoners.

The raids netted but one bottle of whiskey, being mostly productive of the more mild beverage.

the men will appear before Judge Foley this morning for hearings, according to Nash, who was assisted in the raids by officers Tom Ginocchio, Joe May and Fred Northern.

"All on the Job"

"We split up and all of us got on the job," said Nash. "The main difficulty was that we had only one car between us and we had to do the best we could, loading up the results of one raid, taking it to headquarters and then rushing to the next."

One of the places raided is on North Main, two on West Stewart, another "The Rosebud Club" on North Third and Stewart, according to Nash.
