Complaint of the N. H. Congregational Journal.—The universal co-operation on the part of ministers and churches in supporting a religious paper in New Hampshire, is demanded for special reasons. The conductors of other papers, taking advantage of the lack of interest in the State in sustaining one of its own, have considered our territory fair plunder to him who could get little or much of it. Accordingly, agents are commissioned to scour our plains and climb our hills, and penetrate every nook where humanity had found a resting place; they come almost as thick as the buds of spring, the blades of summer, the leaves of autumn, and the flakes of winter; they groan under their mammoth sheets; they tell of the marvels of city newspapers; they attempt still more to aggrandize the already rich and princely establishments of the city; and very much with the honor and morality, as it seems to us, of the sectarian who entices a member from one communion to swell the number of another, they spare no pains or representations to introduce a foreign paper to displace that of the State. If our churches would be true to themselves, they must learn that both charity and justice begin at home; let them confer their patronage upon their own paper, and it can be made, at least through the assistance of others, of more interest and accomplishment, than one ignorant of our condition, and therefore not accommodated to our necessities.

The above complaint is as just as it is graphic.

Key Arguments

Universal Co Operation From Ministers And Churches Is Needed To Support The Local Religious Paper. Out Of State Papers Exploit Lack Of Local Interest By Sending Agents To Solicit Subscribers Aggressively. Agents Promote City Newspapers To Displace The State Paper, Akin To Immoral Sectarian Enticement. Churches Should Prioritize Charity And Justice By Patronizing Their Own Paper. Local Paper Can Be More Relevant And Accomplished Than Ignorant Foreign Ones.
