THE TEMPERANCE CAUSE PROGRESSING.

Winnsborough, so often justly praised for its public spirit, its superior Academies, and intelligent society, has given fresh proof, that it deserves to rank among the first of our villages.

We understand, from a gentleman of high respectability, that the Citizens of Winnsboro' put their recent election, for Town Intendant and Wardens, distinctly on License, or no License, to Retail Spirits. The Temperance ticket had a triumphant majority, nearly, or quite doubling the other. Mr. Samuel G. Barkley was elected Intendant. Mr. McMaster, Mr. James Aiken, and a gentleman whose name we cannot now remember, were chosen Wardens. We have the pleasure of a personal acquaintance with those gentlemen, and feel assured, that neither threats nor flattery can turn them from the path they have marked out for themselves. Most heartily do we wish them success in ridding their delightful village of those nuisances that have done so much to injure their Academies. We speak advisedly, when we say that retail shops have done much injury to their Academy, in past days. We have witnessed many a riot there, when the Academy was under Mr. Stafford's care, (who was an excellent disciplinarian.) and we remember not a single one, that did not originate in a drinking shop. And, in passing, we can but remark, that so far as we can recollect, at least nine-tenths of the expulsions from that School while we were there, and from College while we were there, might be traced to intoxicating liquors.
