THE ROOSEVELT MEMORIAL
A nationwide movement is on for the building of a memorial to Colonel Roosevelt. Just what the form of that memorial will be has not been determined. The Republican hopes that it will assume a practical form: that it will not be a monument built of marble or bronze, but rather some great useful object for the benefit of the nation. If the money raised among the people of this nation could go into a national highway or a sanitarium or some other thing for the everlasting benefit of the entire people it would certainly be in accord with the wish of the man in whose honor it is to be constructed. Monuments of marble amount to little after all. The money expended does no one material good. The memory of a man can just as well be wrought into a useful institution as into something that is of no material benefit. Roosevelt was a man of action and stood for those things that aid in the building up of the nation. His name is everlastingly linked with the Panama canal and the reclamation act. It could well be tied for all time with some great soldier settlement colony or a highway of national scope. But whatever the form, let it be worthy of the great constructive statesman whose heart and soul were bound up in his love and adoration of America.
