Full Text
A TARIFF for revenue, with incidental protection," is what is demanded by the Ohio Republicans. That is the old cry of protection. Protection to whom? Who can be protected by a duty or by a tax? A real tariff for revenue will include "incidental protection," in the sense in which that phrase is used. Revenue is to be raised by inviting foreign importations. "Incidental protection" would discourage those importations and prevent revenue. The Ohio Republicans are not for the protection of their own industry, but are for the protection of that which is in Pennsylvania and New England, which lays a heavy tribute upon our people.- Enq.
