Pledges. On the subject of pledges on the part of constituents to their representatives, it is singular that so many people entertain such erroneous notions, as that the representative is not obliged to obey in a government of the people, the orders of the people. The old lingerings of monarchical ideas of government, still infest the minds of many persons and we shall never become a nation of real republicans, until it is clearly understood that the people's representatives, are not their masters, but that they are the servants of the sovereign people.
