A Very Important Matter -

While sundry appropriations, are being made to open streets in the back side of the town—streets that lead no where in particular, we would call the attention of the city fathers to the condition of the Steam-boat landing,

If it did not cave in and slide away now and then, this might be well denominated a standing subject of local interest. Provision has been made for high water, by building a wharf at the foot of Florida st. but nothing has been done for low water. If boats continue to land at the wharf boat and put their freight upon the dilapidated wharf of Mess Pike & Hart, those gentlemen should have permission to repair it, or the corporation might afford to give some temporary repairs.

As the matter now is, the Corporation has taken the Wharf from them, and will neither repair it or let them.

The present rickety condition of things demand attention, for it is positively dangerous to life and limb. It will probably remain thus until some valuable man falls through and breaks his neck : then when the city has to pay his assignees, a heavy bill of "dam ages" the necessary repairs on the wharf will be made.

Good citizens should reflect a moment on the importance of a good Wharf. How would it be possible for us to get along, had we to depend solely upon our own resources?-

Couldn't do it. Every thing good is imported, and the ratio of its "goodness"is measured altogether by the distance it comes.

We would have to close up the "one horse city," and leave it like drowning rats, if it were not for what we induce people to bring here. For this reason a safe place should be provided to land it. This is the very least that can be done, since much that comes, is never paid for.
