"In spite, I am the same constitution—
of northern boys in this quarter, they are respected and respectable, in their polite conduct and notions. present term: between him and his late opponent's troops will drop him, after his house—they are both alike unfit to govern. opponent, Clarke, there is not much to serve this or any other State. It is almost certain that Forsyth will be the next candidate for that office; and, as he is very much respected in this state, I think he will be elected Governor. He is not altogether orthodox on the great national questions that now and then come up—but his opinions are moderate—and I should apprehend he would make a good Executive of the State.
Col. Cummings, of duelling memory, is the first man in Georgia, as a sound, honest, rational politician, and a most unconscionable fellow. True, he sticks to his own state, in state differences; but when our national interests are at stake, and the prerogatives of the Union involved, no man would sooner draw the sword in their defence. For Georgia's sake, I wish he were her Governor. After all, he is extremely unpopular.
New-York is going on like herself. De Witt Clinton is the first man in the nation. I wish he may be to preside over the destinies of the nation."
