The People Will Elect Him
The nomination of our standard-bearer, Hon. J. Morrison Harris, in the 2d Congressional District, reflects great credit on both Reformers and Republicans for the harmony of action and unanimity of agreement of both organizations. It is the most creditable on account of its entire absence of formal pledges solicited from the gentleman who received the nomination, and at the same time honorable to the distinguished nominee that his pure record in the past was sufficient guarantee without pledges of what his conduct would be in the future.
The energy and enthusiasm of the canvass last fall, which culminated in such a grand majority for Mr. Harris, is but the earnest of what it will be this time. Our standard-bearer is a gentleman for whom no voter need be ashamed to cast his ballot, for he possesses in no ordinary degree all the qualifications which should attach to the patriotic statesman. And there is not a citizen in the 2d Congressional District, or in the entire State, who has voted for him at any time who does not feel a just pride in the support given and in the consciousness that they have never been deceived in any trust confided to him.
The public speeches made during his long and useful career can always be read in the conduct of his public life. No man can point to a single stain upon his character, and political friends and opponents have ever found him ready to render important service to each whenever called upon to do it. This has, in no small degree, made him the peer if not the superior in popularity of any public man in the State.
In the canvass last fall his matchless eloquence and unanswerable arguments carried him as a victor to the polls, and but for the ballot-box stuffing, rowdyism and fraud practiced in the city of Baltimore, he would be our Governor to-day, and he ought to be, for he had a majority of the legal votes cast for Governor last November. It is well known that every citizen in this Congressional District who voted for him then, and knows he was cheated in his choice, will vote for him again this time with even stronger purpose and higher pride than before. They are certain they are going to vote for the winning candidate, for a fair vote and honest count will give him a rousing majority in the district.
