Awful destruction of life—Carelessness of South- erners!—On Friday the 14th inst. the steamboat Medora, new and just fitted to run between Balti- more and Norfolk, was blown nearly to atoms by the explosion of one of her boilers. One hundred or more persons were on board, about to take an excursion of pleasure; some thirty or forty per- sons were either killed or badly injured. The fact that most of these accidents occur in one part of the country—that at the North and in England there are very few such fatal disasters shows con- clusively, that criminal carelessness is at the bot- tom of them all—or nearly so. Only one life has ever been lost in steamboats east of Boston!
