Which party is most largely represented?
The Adjutant General of the State of Illinois, in his official report just presented to the Legislature of that State, gives the number of volunteers from the several counties. We give the figures in a few instances, adding thereto the vote the several counties named, cast for Lincoln in 1860:
These counties are situated in Southern Illinois-that portion of the State known to politicians as "Egypt"-the strongest and most reliable Democratic section, not only of the State, but of the Union. Williamson county, for instance, gives but 173 Abolition votes, and yet she has sent 1001 men to the war-being only 100 men less than its entire able-bodied population. In Hamilton county, where the proportion of Democrats to Abolitionists is still larger, but 50 men liable to service remain at home. The Southern portion of Illinois, proverbially and unalteringly Democratic, has sent four men to the one supplied by Northern Illinois, where the Abolitionists have their chief strength.
Thus, by facts and figures, is a barefaced lie, circulated for the purpose of impugning loyal men, "nailed to the counter." A lie may travel faster than truth, but the pace of the latter is steadier, and sooner or later it will come out ahead as it does in this instance.
