Charles Powell, a local eighth grade student, was the winner of a forestry conservation poster contest sponsored in the local school last week by the Jacksonville Woman's Club. Powell's poster, showing a woman throwing a lighted cigarette from a car, will be entered in a district contest. The program, sponsored by the N. C. Federation of Woman's Clubs, was designed to interest school children in forestry conservation. Students from the fifth to eighth grades were eligible to compete. Second place winner in the contest was Carolyn Rogers, 7th grade, and Timmons Davis, 6th grade. Mrs. S. F. Hutcherson was in charge of the contest in the high school and Mrs. Al Collins supervised it in the elementary school. Posters from the 12th district, of which Mrs. G. E. Gardner is president, will be sent here for judging from Craven, Carteret, Lenoir, Jones, Pamlico and Onslow counties. The district winner will automatically be entered in the state finals. The Jacksonville posters are being displayed in the local school.
