Extract of a letter from a gentleman of the first respectability in Pennsylvania, to a friend in Baltimore, dated Chambersburg, 11th April, 1827.
'I have the pleasure to inform you that the meeting of the friends of the Administration, held in this place yesterday, was the largest and most respectable assemblage ever witnessed in this county, on any public occasion whatever. So formidable and imposing was this meeting, exhibiting such strong attachment to the Administration, that the opposition party have been compelled to admit that in this (Franklin) and several other counties, a decided and powerful majority will support Mr. Adams and Mr. Clay.
'The proceedings, preamble and resolutions adopted, will appear in our papers next week. I cannot but believe, that with proper attention to impart correct information to the people, on the subject of the Presidential question, Pennsylvania will, at the ensuing election, support the present Administration. The only danger to be apprehended arises from the efforts making by the oppositionists, to leave the people the mere name of electing a President, whilst by intrigues they are to be so trammelled as to be deceived in their views of the real facts in relation to men and their official measures.
'The combination entered into by the opposition party, to oppose the administration before the scope of its policy could be known, and before it had done either good or evil, must be deemed a species of "moral treason" against the best interests and preservation of our confederacy, and ought to excite, and will excite, honest indignation in the minds of an intelligent, patriotic people.'
