PORTSMOUTH, September 7.
The British news-papers, by being in our own idiom, are much read and circulated among us-nay, often transcribed into our own ; now these are carefully filled by our enemies with reproaches, invectives and indignities which an American ought to pass over with silent contempt--or else they are filled with threats of withdrawing a credit which we do not want-or of our being destroyed by savages on sea, or savages on land-- these go into the counties, where as being printed-here, many an ignorant person takes the whole for granted, and thereby great mischiefs are effected among us--our governments are treated with odium--our manners with ridicule, and our independency with disdain--can these things be proper subjects for free men ?--surely not.
Let us be no longer indebted for our intelligence to channels so corrupt-but let a spirit of patriotism arise. and call forth the abilities of our country-men from their deepest recesses : let them fill our Gazettes from time to time with useful hints and decent strictures--- plans for the advancement of its prosperity, in every possible branch :--Above all things, let them inculcate the propriety of maintaining virtue throughout the state, as essential to its preservation and good order ; and while we drop the war of sects and parties in this happy land, where all are equal tolerated, let us give countenance to the cause of religion generally, without discriminating the various modifications in which it is performed, equally acceptable.--Equally honorable and beneficial to his country is a really pious man, let him be of what name or denomination he pleases :-If he be one who openly asserts the cause of virtue and of christianity, and lives in conformity to their dictates, he does the most essential service to his country that he can possibly perform.
