One of the most deceptive buildings on the campus of the University of Washington is the new A.S.U.W. Building, more popularly known as the HUB (Husky Union Building). It has been open for a little more than a week, although not completely finished.
This column is intended for those old grads and former students of Washington who knew of the student union building only as a mythical plan, an optimist's dream. After more than a quarter of a century of dreaming and planning, it is now a reality. It is located across from the Museum.
Although no beer is served, like on the Wisconsin campus, it will undoubtedly become the hub of student activities, as the new name implies.
Chuck Owens, the non-athletic ASUW director, who was lured here from Wisconsin to direct the building plans as well as the activities, states that while the local student union building will not become the center of student life like at Wisconsin, it will nevertheless revolutionize many of the students' idea of a union building.
Washington has too many day-students, who make no attempt to take part in campus activities. Small-town campuses differ in this respect. However, when the two additional units are built within a couple of years, there will be a large dance hall accommodating over 800 couples, a bowling alley, barber shop, craft shop, post office sub-station, as well as guest rooms for concert artists.
Even now, with only the two units, there are many student offices, coffee shop, dining room, snackbar, meeting rooms with kitchenettes attached, Alumni office, and a huge lounge.
Whoever was responsible for the color scheme certainly had a field day. The most modern color combinations are found in every room to give the inside of the building a completely different appearance from the conservative outside.
It is a student-operated building, and will hire student help both part-time and full-time. (Nisei students interested in part-time jobs should look into the matter.)
If any of you old-timers are near the campus, you must give this building the once-over.
