NEW FLATTOP

With the contract awarded last July the Navy is building the U. S. S. Forrestal, the first of a new type of aircraft carrier, which probably will become the pattern for an entirely new family of flattops. The Forrestal will be a 59,900-ton ship, 1040 feet long, with a flight deck as wide as 252 feet at one point. A multiple system of catapults will allow simultaneous launching of four planes--a feature vitally needed when sudden action is necessary. Estimated cost of the new carrier is $218,000,000.
