No Time For Pussyfootin' We Do or We Don't
Monday, May 25 is D Day for Little Rock. It is the day of decision. It is the day that will determine whether we will rebuild our educational system that has been impaired during the past two years, or whether we will abolish a system that has once held the respect of the entire nation.
Monday is the day that will determine whether we will close about $15,000,000 in school building and idle several hundred instructors, and convert several thousand thriving youngsters into juvenile delinquents, or whether we will set the pattern to resolve the mess that our chief executive has thrown us into, and get our classrooms back into operation by the time that school term rolls around this September.
Do not get us wrong. We know that from the depth to which we have sunk, one day is too short a time for things to be resolved. But one day is long enough for a start to be made. And that start can be made by every qualified voter in the district going to the polls, and voting his conviction.
The issue upon which we are voting is far too great for any one voter to leave it to the other. It is an issue that requires the attention of every voter in the city who has any interest at all in the present or future education of his city.
Forty-four school teachers and school administrators have been attacked because somebody didn't vote during the last election.
Maybe that somebody was you and maybe not. And maybe your job is not in jeopardy today. But, what about tomorrow?
If you drive a car, it stands to reason that you have a poll tax receipt, and that receipt will give you an opportunity to become a citizen Monday, if at no other time, so for once be a citizen.
We are not going to tell you we are not interested in how you vote, but we are not going to insult your intelligence by telling you how to vote. We will go as far as to tell you that we are far more interested in whether you vote than we are how you vote, because we believe that after you have read the ad on page 16 in this paper you will vote your conviction.
