Jerome Expected Developments Today and Had Automobile in Readiness to Hurry Fugitive Across Line Into Vermont-Thaw's Attorneys Bitterly Criticise Action
SHERBROOKE, Aug. 30.-Upon the application of Chief of Police Boudreau of Sherbrooke, Judge Hutchinson issued a writ today requiring that Harry Thaw be produced in court on Tuesday to show cause why he should not be released. The delay gives Thaw's attorneys a chance to fight the writ of habeas corpus. New York attorneys were disappointed with the order of the court as they expected that Thaw would be immediately released. Former District Attorney Jerome of New York had an automobile in readiness to rush Thaw to Coaticook where the summary immigration court was prepared to hear the case to deport the fugitive to Norton Mills, Vermont, before the lawyers had a chance to appeal the case.
The habeas corpus application was made out in the regular form and the court had no option but to issue the writ. A delay until Tuesday was the only consideration he had the power to show. Thaw's attorneys say they had foreseen this development and have a plan ready to checkmate the writ when the hearing opens.
Thaw's attorneys bitterly criticised the chief of police for applying for the writ. They say that his action in the matter was assisted by a promise of $500 reward if Thaw is returned to Matteawan.
