Full Text

Monday the 23d inst. the first regiment of the city and county of New-York, and other citizens residing within its limits, agreeable to the request of the Lieut. Col. Commandant, assembled on their regimental parade at 7 o'clock, A. M. and from thence proceeded to Governor's-Island, where they performed a day's labor on the fortifications there erecting, under the direction of the commander in chief, as one of the commissioners. The fatigue party on this occasion, consisted of two hundred and sixty four men, which were as many as could be advantageously employed. There is every reason to believe that the inhabitants composing the district of this regiment, to whom it was not convenient to attend on this day, will display the like patriotism with their brethren, by furnishing an equal number on the next summons. The names of the citizens who composed the party, are in possession of the Adjutant of the Regiment, a duplicate whereof he has transmitted to the attending commissioners. It is presumed that so laudable an example will be followed by the citizens residing within the districts of the several regiments alternately, till the fortifications are completed.
