Full Text

BAD MEN are generally such because of their
youthful surroundings. Most of them have
not had the advantage of good moral training
and example, and are therefore devoid of the
proper kind of feelings in reference to the rights
of person and property of other people. In
nearly all such cases their parents have set
them bad examples, and taught them that it is
"smart" to cheat and defraud, if they can by
so doing escape the penalties of the law. From
cheating it is a short step to stealing, and from
stealing to personal violence. "Train up a
child in the way he should go," and there is no
fear that he will help fill the jails, reformatories
and prisons.
