Columbia, S. C., (ANP) South Carolina Gov. J. Strom Thurmond told the Palmetto State Teachers' association meeting here last week that "South Carolina is on the move in many respects," although he was unable to attend the meeting. His message to the Negro teachers was read by his executive secretary J. Ernest.
Craig, during the convention's opening session. After his general statement concerning progress in his state the Dixiecrat leader told the teachers "We must work together in harmony" Friday night the two-day convention was addressed by Dr. Channing H. Tobias, director of the Phelps-Stokes fund and member of the President Truman's Committee on civil rights. President John F. Potts declared in his address that South Carolina was in the midst of an "educational renaissance."
"Never before in the history of our state," he said, "has as much emphasis been placed on improving and equalizing opportunities."
