By Capt. Sargeant, lately arrived here from Jamaica, we have the following Deposition.
Appeared John Sargeant, Master, William Thomson, Abraham Penny, James M'Cann, James Hillard, and John Mailey, Mariner, March, 1752.

Mate, David Allen, Boatwain, James Keroon, Mariners, of the Brigantine Union, of Dublin, who being severally and duly sworn on the Holy Evangelists, depose and say: That being on a Voyage from the aforesaid Port of Dublin to the Island of Jamaica, on the Twenty-first Day of January last, One Thousand Seven Hundred and Fifty-two, they were off the East End of Porto Rico, South and by West, about ten Leagues Distance, when they met with a Spanish Sloop, mounted with ten Carriage Guns, and about One Hundred Men, commanded by one Francisco Panch (who went to them by that Name) who ordered them to bring to, and after boarding and taking Possession of the said Brigantine Union, in a piratical Manner, broke open her Hatches, and took out of her the following Articles, viz. fourteen Barrels of Beef, nine Barrels Beef, five Barrels Herrings, fifteen Firkins Butter, one Keg Tallow, one Barrel Gun-powder, one Barrel Peas, one four Boxes Candles, three Boxes ditto, mark'd with a Bunch of Grapes, Drum, one Hand-lead and Line, one Deep-sea Line, six fishing Lines, one Log Line and Reel, one Ax, one Adze, one Hand-saw, two Files, two one Speaking Trumpet, one Hanging Compass, four Half-minute and Chizels, four Caulking Irons, six Gimblets, two Augers, two Lanthorns, two Half-hour Glasses, one Box of Medicines, ten hundred Weight of Cheese, one Chest of Irish Linen, six hundred Weight of new Cordage, Needles, two Fish Gigs and Lines, two Pump Rakes, six Pewter Plates, thirty Yards of Sail Canvas, twelve Pounds of Twine, two Dozen of two Dishes, six Knives and Forks, six Pewter Spoons, twelve Yards of Bunting, twelve Yards red Bays, two Pair of Bellows, one Iron Pot, four Wooden Bowls, two Punch Bowls, one thousand Scupper Nails, one thousand Pump Nails, twenty Pounds Spike Nails, five hundred Twenty-penny Nails, five hundred Ten-penny Nails, one thousand Boat Nails, six Pump Bolts, two Hammers, one Maul, three Stock Locks, two Dozen Staples, and one Pendant, a Silver Watch, three Barrels of Beef, four Bundles, Quantity twenty ruled, and even plain Shirts, and one Piece of Linen Sheeting, about forty Yards. After which they put on Board the said Brigantine Union fifteen Spaniards, and sent her into the Port of St. Domingo, where they put the Master into Confinement, and kept him four Days, and obliged the Mate, and the rest of the said Brigantine's Company, to quit her, whereby they were obliged to lie on the Streets for several Nights; and these Deponents further depose and say, That the Spaniards aforesaid kept Possession of the said Brigantine Union thirty-seven Days, and then discharged her, without giving any Reasons for their so keeping and detaining her, nor making any Restitution or Satisfaction for any of the aforementioned Goods which they had taken, or for any Damage done to either the Vessel or her Cargo. They then made the best of their Way for the Island of Jamaica, where they arrived the fourth Day of this Instant March, One Thousand Seven Hundred and Fifty-two, and further these Deponents say not.
