Chicago, Ill., Aug. 19.—"Let her go." So ordered the national executive committee of the Socialistic party yesterday when it found that $6,150 of the "Red Special" fund was on hand that $2,100 more was pledged. The word go, however, does not mean that the contract for the full ocean to ocean trip will be signed. It was impossible, for much less than half of the necessary fund has been secured. The word "go" will get the "Red Special" buzzing on only one-half of the proposed tour from Chicago to the Pacific coast and back.
The committee did the next best thing. It set the special going half way. The contracts were ordered signed and before the end of the month the special will start west with a roar.
As is well known by this time, fully $20,000 is needed for the ocean to ocean trip. The campaign committee is not discouraged. It feels safe in saying that the sum will be raised, and in a very short time, which will enable the red special to cover practically all of the United States, making one of the most noteworthy educational political campaigns in the history of the political world. Eugene Debs, the presidential nominee of the Socialist party, will be aboard, making stops and speeches wherever possible, and campaign and Socialist literature will be distributed.
