Full Text

By last night's mail we received New-York papers containing extracts from London papers as late as the 28th of March. Under this date we find intelligence of the late defeat of the French troops, --it is there given as a mere report, for the confirmation of which they wait the arrival of further accounts. It is what they anticipate, not what has or probably will occur. Mention is also made of a battle being fought between the combined armies and the French, in which the former (of course) were victorious. Having no accounts directly from France, we cannot judge of the degree of credit due these reports better than by comparing one with another, and in no late instance do we recollect meeting with so much palpable contradiction as in the different relations of this action--from 7 to 20,000 of the French are said to have been slain, while other accounts rate the loss of both sides at 20,000: in one account Dumourier is said to have been wounded and made prisoner, in another he saves his life and liberty by chopping off the arm of an Austrian soldier who had laid hold of him. The battle is said to have happened on Friday the 22d of March. At the same time it is said that despatches from Lord Auckland, Minister at the Hague from the British Court, Tuesday the 26th of March, make no mention of such an event.
