RECOMPENSE.
Long ago was I weary of sorrow,
Of tears that would come in the night,
Till I learned how to pray in the darkness,
Then with patience, await the light.
And I have had thoughts in the darkness,
That could never have come in the day,
When I knew that life's pain must all be right
And to bear it the only way.
I once heard the song of a night bird sweet,
When my eyes were filled with tears;
I arose and knelt at the Master's feet,
And my soul put by her fears.
I said, "If a tiny bird can sing
In the dark and gloom of the night,
I can surely face what the dawn will bring!"
Then my last fear winged its flight.
So I pray in the dim white light of dawn
For new sight with which to see
The glories of the Eternal Morn,
Where the Son of Man shall be!
