We are informed that during the continuation of the ship Express of China at Canton, a salute was fired on some occasion from one of the ships in the harbour, when very ignorantly and most unfortunately it proved that the charge in one of the saluting guns had not been drawn, which proved fatal to two Chinese inhabitants, who were killed on the spot. This melancholy event brought on the resentment of 30 thousand natives, who secured the gunner of an English ship, from whence the execution was done; but the Commanders and ships' companies of all the vessels from various countries, British, French, Americans, Danes, Swedes, Dutch, &c. combined to recover the captive gunner, and after a week's cessation of business, and the man had submitted to a very equitable trial, was acquitted and enlarged, the are entire good humour of the Chinese returned, since they found from a very candid investigation, that the misfortune was not premeditated, but pronounced in their law courts mere chance medley. It must be observed, that China is governed by most excellent laws, which are rigidly executed, otherwise what could be done with so many myriads of inhabitants as compose the immense empire of China. The preceding general detail has been suddenly collected; should there be found any error, the Printer will gladly produce, from more accurate and minute intelligence that may be offered him, a correct edition of this commodity.

Event Details
During the ship Express of China's stay at Canton, a salute from a ship in the harbour misfired due to an undrawn charge, killing two Chinese on the spot. This led to resentment from 30,000 natives who seized the English gunner. Commanders from British, French, American, Danish, Swedish, Dutch, and other ships combined to recover him. After a week's business cessation and equitable trial, the gunner was acquitted as the death was accidental (chance medley), restoring Chinese good humor.
