Stopped His Paper:

Cedar Mountain, N. C.,

Oct. 7, 1890.

Asheville Weekly Citizen:—You will please stop sending me your paper. My reasons for this are because I have read it for some time and can't hear any thing but negro and black republican and that Crawford is giving Ewart the right kind of medicine. So just stop sending it at once. I like your paper as well I do any democrat paper, but I haven't got any use for any of them.

Respectfully,

W. T. Fowler.

Mr. Fowler was perfectly right in ordering his Citizen discontinued if he did not like it; but he is very much alone in his disapproval of the paper. We cannot understand Mr. Fowler's allusion to "negro and black republican." We have very little to say about the negro, very little indeed. He is a topic too much dwelt upon by the southern press, giving him an importance that is not really attached to him except by some of our esteemed republican friends who, since the tickets were made up, we see have become very solicitous of his welfare.

Mr. Fowler's insinuation that we have been calling some persons "black republicans" is not founded on fact. He cannot find the expression used in the editorial column of THE CITIZEN.

On the whole, our final impression is that Mr. Fowler has found our democracy becoming a little too strong for his republicanism. It was probably about to give way and Mr. Fowler was right in stopping his Citizen if he desires to continue in the party of Quay, the force bill, and reckless public extravagance.
