Extract of a letter from a gentleman in one of the New-England States, dated October 5, 1789.
"Last Friday morning I dismissed my best workman, he had been intoxicated two days. Immediately after dismissing, I set off for , and arrived at home a little before night on Saturday--the first news I heard was, that --had continued in liquor, but was got so well, as to purchase a number of articles of clothing and had set off for Boston. Soon after, we heard, that, after going one mile, he stopped and dined--got more grog, and again set off--went but a few rods and laid down in the road to sleep; whilst sleeping, a foot traveller robbed him of his bundle of clothing; On waking he missed it--made enquiry after it, and not finding it--being intoxicated, of strong passions, and little judgment, went immediately and hanged himself with a handkerchief to an apple tree, close by the road, where he was found dead soon after--the Jury of Inquest sat on his body--brought in their verdict, Felo de se. His corpse was afterwards stolen from the Coroner, and privately buried."
