NEW ROAD WORK

Glynn county's convict gang, which has been at work on a second new road from Frazier's Crossing to Everett, a distance of something like five or six miles, was yesterday called off the work, following a meeting of the county commissioners at which, it is understood, quite an interesting discussion was engaged in.

Just what caused the action on the part of the commissioners does not seem altogether clear to those who believed that the road was badly needed, and the action of the commission was the topic of considerable discussion yesterday afternoon.

For the past two or three months, it seems, the county gang has been busy on constructing a new road from Frazier's Crossing to Everett. This new road, however, which has already been completed, and which is an unusually good one, is not a direct line. It covers a distance of approximately thirteen miles; taking a northeasterly direction from Frazier's and thence running in a westerly direction to Everett. The road, for some reason, was built around this route, rather than direct.

Later it was stated that a direct road to Everett was badly needed, and the convict gang was put to work on it. Considerable of the right of way had been completed and the convicts were busy on the road yesterday when the work was called off.

The commissioners, or rather those who were in favor of discontinuing the work, point out that a second road is not necessary; that although the present road is considerably longer in distance, still it well serves the purpose, and that the county should not spend a big sum on a new road.

On the other hand many citizens believe that the road should be built; they point out that it will furnish an excellent short route for Wayne county people and others, that it will be a portion of the new Macon-Brunswick auto highway, etc. Anyway, the question is not settled, it seems, and the subject is likely to be re-opened, with the request that the new road be built.

work on the new road called off; debate ongoing with potential to reopen the issue.

Event Details

County commissioners stopped the convict gang's construction of a second, direct road from Frazier's Crossing to Everett (5-6 miles) after a meeting and discussion. An existing 13-mile indirect road already connects the areas. Proponents argue for the shorter route benefiting Wayne County and as part of the Macon-Brunswick auto highway; opponents say the current road suffices and costs are high.
