Advice to the Lovelorn

Dear Beatrice Fairfax:

I'm an unhappy girl because I'm not popular with boys and I think I know the reason. but there's nothing I can do about it.

I'm not bad-looking at all, in fact people tell me I'm very pretty, but my mother won't let me do my hair the way all the other girls do theirs these days and that makes me look so old-fashioned that I think boys just don't want to be even seen with me,

Can you think of anything I can say that will make my parents understand ?

Dear Jo Newly

your hair has anything to do with your lack of dates except perhaps, in one way.

Don't you think it might be that you've made yourself so unhappy and so self-conscious about your hair that you're probably just not any fun to be with because you're feeling all the time that you're looked down upon ?

If you'll just take my word for it that it's not half so much a girl's looks as it is her personality that makes her popular, and will do everything you can to be friendly, thoughtful, a good sport, nice to everybody and have a lot of lively interests which you can share with others,

I'm sure you'll find boys will want to date you no matter how you do your hair.
