FIRE!

On Saturday morning last, just before day-break, the warehouse on the corner of King and Patrick-streets, occupied by Mr. Bradley as a cabinet factory, was discovered by the watch to be on fire, who on breaking open the windows found that it had made such progress as to render it impossible to rescue any of the stock or materials therein. The fire communicated to the two adjoining large three story brick dwellings, occupied by the Rev. S. H. Cone, and Mr. James S. Scott, both of which were also destroyed—but the furniture, &c. were nearly all saved, as very probably might have been the dwellings, could a supply of water have been furnished.

Several of the buildings on the opposite sides of the streets, caught fire from the falling cinders; but the calm state of the weather and the application of a few buckets of water, prevented any material injury. Loss, of the buildings alone, estimated at from $12 to $15,000. The fire, we believe, was no doubt accidental.

The indifference manifested at this fire, was indeed most shameful. After most of the few pumps in the neighborhood, had given out, it was impossible, with the utmost efforts of a few individuals, to form a line to another one immediately in the vicinity of the fire.

A most horrible spectacle was near presenting itself, after the fire had communicated to the lower part of the buildings. Two black fellows commenced fighting until they got directly under the walls, when each endeavored to push the other into the fire; and one having gained the advantage of his antagonist, but for the interference of some of the spectators, who immediately ran to them, would have thrown him into one of the floors from which the flames were issuing at a most terrible rate.

"One of the People," from Fairfax, will appear in our next.
