ANCHORAGE- Appointment of
Marvin R. Marston as assistant adjutant
general for the Alaska National
Guard with the rank of
lieutenant colonel, was announced
today.
Colonel Marston, who gained
fame during the war as organizer
of the Eskimos in the Alaska Territorial
Guard, is scheduled to leave
for the Arctic on the next plane
for a six-weeks organization tour.
The appointment was made by
Governor Gruening as commanding
officer of the National Guard, as
authorized by the last legislature.
Marston will be in charge of
organizing more than 50 units of
the Guard in Arctic villages, to be
used as "human radar" in the military
program.
First stop will be at Unalakleet
from which point he will travel by
airplane and dog team to villages
on Norton Sound. He will organize
the units and appoint the commanding
officers for each. The
Army will furnish training officers
for the Guard program.
Small armories to be used for
the storage of equipment, to be
supplied by the Army, are being
placed at strategic points.
