ARKANSAS SCHOOL CRISIS
Governor Faubus of Arkansas is still making headlines. The National Guard he called to prevent any Negroes from registering at the Little Rock High School is still around the school, some of them at the governor's mansion.
Federal Judge Robert Davies has ordered the governor and state guard officials to show cause why the troops should not be removed. This hearing is scheduled for September 20.
After ten days of defying the order to allow Negroes to enter Central High School, the governor has condescended to ask for a personal talk with President Eisenhower. The time for this talk has been set for Sept. 14 at the Newport Naval Station.
If the governor's intention in this case is political, as we dared to suggest last week, then he has certainly achieved his aims.
He has had the attention of the nation, the United Nations, in fact, the whole world centered upon his defiance of the Federal Authorities in calling out the National Guard.
Governor Faubus has shown disrespect for our highest authority and brought about much unfavorable criticism.
It has done the country much harm.
What transpires between the governor and the President, might or might not be made public; however let us hope it will be the means of bringing about a peaceful settlement, but at the same time remembering that peace at any price, can become a rather dangerous thing.
