Petitions are being circulated across the nation requesting President-elect John F. Kennedy to re-appoint Henry Cabot Lodge, unsuccessful candidate for vice-president, to the United Nations post he now holds. Lodge is the ambassador to the world body. The group, named Lodge-UN Committee, has headquarters in Chicago.
A telegram to Kennedy reads: "Congratulations on a well-run campaign. As president of this great nation, you will be obliged to appoint a person as ambassador to the UN who can best represent the people of the US.
"We citizens, members of the Lodge-UN Committee urge you to re-appoint Henry Cabot Lodge to this post. This is the time when a man of Mr. Lodge's experience and diplomatic skill are a necessity.
"We are enclosing several petitions signed by citizens and voters, some of whom supported your efforts in the presidential race Tuesday, Nov. 8, 1960. As more signed petitions are received, they will be forwarded directly to you.
"Again, congratulations, and you may be sure that we will do everything in our power to help you maintain the number one position our nation enjoys in the eyes of the Free World."
