Temperance.
The Sangerville and Guilford Temperance Society which was formed in Sept. 1828, and then consisted of but seven members, now numbers about three hundred. This we are constrained to acknowledge is the Lord's doing, however it may be undervalued by opposers. For, those of the aged, who had been accustomed to a common and fashionable use of spirituous liquors, have been induced to lay them aside as worse than useless; and the young, the hope of the rising generation, refuse to taint their breath and ruin their health by swallowing the fiery liquid. Some of our merchants dispense with them in traffic, and physicians in practice. In short, their use has become disreputable, and it is ardently hoped, that the time will soon arrive, when every Christian will see and feel the necessity of aiding in this work of reform, by precept and example,—'for to him that knoweth to do good and doeth it not, to him it is sin.' I would add that the various sects of Christians with very many of the unregenerate, are zealously engaged in striving to promote a disuse of spirituous liquors. Also, that since this society was organized, a very wonderful display of divine grace has been manifested among us.
