DEAF-MUTE MAKES
Eloquent
Plea Before a Police Justice,

Capt. Roch has some good officers who
can rise to an emergency as rapidly as
good yeast in a bread-pan. Such a one is
Officer Meadows, says the Chicago News.

Yesterday afternoon he found two
drunken men quarrelling over the possession of a hat. One of them had lost his,
and both claimed the remaining tile. One
of the pair was a deaf-mute, but Officer
Meadows was equal to a little thing like
that. He understood how to use his
fingers, and soon had the mute's side of
the story. He locked both up.

When the case was called this morning
the man who could talk did talk, while
the man who couldn't speak stood by and
looked on in a wistful way.

"Look here," said the Court, "this
isn't giving the dumb man a fair show.
He can't hear what is said and can't say
anything for himself."

"Oh,
I'll fix that all right, Your
Honor," said Officer Meadows briskly,
and he proceeded to work his fingers.
The spectators rose in their seats and the
Court looked interested. The mute
smiled and nodded by turns, and at last
seemed to grasp the situation. He turned
towards the Court and his hands flew in a
rapid manner before the Court's astonished gaze. He finished and smiled.

"Ah, yes; sure enough," said His
Honor in the most knowing manner.
"You are discharged and the other man
fined $3."
