ACHIEVEMENT DAY COLLECTION
TO AID DUTCH ORPHANS IN EUROPE
The homemakers who left their spring cleaning to attend the 4th annual Achievement Day last week sponsored by the Ottawa County Home Demonstration Council of the Agricultural Extension Service, were rewarded by an interesting afternoon's program. Mrs. Harris Kardatzke of Elmore presided during the afternoon.
Among the highlights of the program was an inspiring account by Mrs. Rebecca Olds, the Ohio Representative to the Associated Country Women of the World, of the meeting she attended in Holland. Mrs. Olds wore a costume from Holland and showed two dolls dressed in typical costume. The collection taken during the program is to be used to aid in the support of Dutch orphans in Holland. Another interesting part of the program was a fashion and flower review given by Mrs. Harold Pickard of Elmore with the help of some of the county homemakers. New and unusual corsages were worn to emphasize various costumes. The climax of the review came when a bride in satin threw her bouquet of ringed double petunias into the audience.
The music of the afternoon was provided by the Ottawa County Homemakers' Chorus directed by Mrs. Virgil Revenaugh, of Oak Harbor. Mrs. Revenaugh also played a xylophone solo.
Mrs. Burnette Brough of Bay township challenged the group to take action in sending packages to the needy people of Europe. She read excerpts of letters received in response to packages which have been sent overseas.
The Home Demonstration program was explained to the group by Mrs. George Peters of Carroll township who is the State Home Demonstration Council president.
Following the program tea was served by a committee of the county home council. A fine display of exhibits was also arranged by a committee of the council. The exhibit included novelties from other lands, handsome articles and gifts, refinished furniture, and crocheted rugs.
As part of the afternoon program Miss Betty Lou Spalding, Ottawa County Home Demonstration Agent, introduced the new Home Demonstration Council members. These councillors represent the local township women in helping to plan services and meetings of interest to all homemakers.
The new members are:
Allen—Mrs. John Gruetter, Curtice; Bay—Mrs. C. W. Bunning, Oak Harbor; Benton—Mrs. Clarence Freimark, Graytown; Carroll—Mrs. Geo. Layman, Oak Harbor; Catawba—Mrs. Edw. Ludwig, Port Clinton; Clay—To be appointed; Danbury—Mrs. Vernon Rider, Port Clinton; Erie—Mrs. Dean Kirk, Port Clinton; Harris—Mrs. Robert Overmyer, Elmore; Portage—To be appointed; Salem—Mrs. Francis Denny, Oak Harbor.
